There is so much going on in the world let alone the world of a fashionista. So if you have a strong point of view and some writing skills hit me up. This blog is constantly growing and morphing. I am looking for someone who has there finger on the pulse of the fresh happenings of today. I need someone to help with reviews as well. I currently would like to expand the Budget Beauty Buzz. It is a feature I am going to try to have weekly. Making Changes: Fitness - New Year New You

Like millions of people around the world January 1st holds a beacon of hope. The metaphorical slate is clean and the time of change is once again upon us. As women we struggle with our imperfections. Our self image (weight and fitness) is assuredly on top of that list and it is for me. We all know diet and exercise is the key to change, however this is never as easy as it sounds. I am here to lend my opinion and ideas to this matter.

I struggle with my weight and I suffer from short lived motivation in order to improve this fact. I get started and I am fully amped and ready to fight the good fight. Day 1 through Day 4 is a little tough, I try to pin point all my bad habits and conquer each one individually. For example when I am bored, I snack. When I am stressed or sad I snack or eat a second helping at dinner. If I have waited to long to make dinner I start snacking during the dinner making process (which is also a terrible habit). I have given up sodas just extra wasted sugary delicious highly caffeinated calories I so badly crave when I am in a energy slump...(sorry) but I have given them up all the same.I am not really a sugar person I don't eat sweets or make desserts so that's not to much of a problem for me. I like salty foods, like chips and dips, crackers and cheese, things of that nature. So I just stopped putting them in my shopping cart because if they never make it to the check out line they never make it to my waist line either.

So far there is nothing new with my approach to better health. I cut out the things that are bad for me and try to be more active and by active I mean exercise. I am not fond of exercise I have tried a lot of dvd's and invested in as seen on TV gimmicks. Most were not for me. I read a lot of books, so I have a lot of background information on nutrition facts and endless amounts of guru tips. I even bought a Wii and balance board in hopes that the games would keep me active and they did, for 2 weeks.

Before the end of the month I have retreated to my old ways and make plans to start over again at a future date. The self loathing begins and a good dose of comfort food soothes my soul. This is my cycle. I have sat in my apartment and thought about this cycle for two weeks. What was is that made me loose steam? Why did I not keep going? I know this needs to be a life style change but how can I make this happen?

After pondering what stopped me and trying to figure out just what would keep me going. It came to me; I started each time the wrong way. I wanted to fix all the negative aspects of my body, which was overwhelming and expensive. Let's face it we can't live in a happy bubble all of the time. Real life has its stressers. Work and bills make me to tired to exercise and my budges exhausted for new expensive healthy recipes. It would seem the chips are stacked against me. After reliving my former failures it all seemed to make sense. I need to start this process with positivity. If I was happy it would stand to reason that I would have longer sustainable motivation. If I think of myself and all the positive attributes as appose to all the negative this will encourage me to stay on track. I have also decided to treat myself as if I everyday is a success. I think for me realizing how I feel is really tied to how much energy and enthusiasm I have as well as the types of food I eat. I notice the connection. This is still a journey and I am not one to give up.

Now it is time to face the budget factor. I try to live my life to the highest extravagance I can afford because there is nothing fabulous about being broke. If you traveled down the produce isle lately you will know that the price of produce is astronomical and depending on where you live the price is even higher for foods out of season. So it took a bit of creativity but I have decided to simply make substitutions in recipes I already know. I sub ground beef for ground turkey. I use frozen veggies in soups and sauces. I use olive oil instead of vegetable oil and sea salt for table salt. The list of swapping this for that is long. There is a really good book called Cooking yourself thin that can give you a ton of examples. As for the time consumption of making new a detailed recipes I decided to cook two or three meals in one day and but Ziploc and Rubbermaid container to freeze the extra. The Ziploc containers actually have divided sections of 2 or 3 and this in convenient for portion control.

I no longer invest my own money in books and DVDs I check them out from my university and local library and what they don't have I can usually request through inter-library loan. The request can take up to two weeks to get to me so I request a few a week so by the time they arrive I am ready to add them to what I maybe doing on that week. This alone has saved me $20 to $50 each DVD fitness program. It's a good idea to have basic fitness equipment in your home fitness bands, yoga mat, dumbbells, fitness ball and anything else that you enjoy that covers the basics. I personally checked out yoga, pilates, belly dancing, Carmen Electra's Strip tease and ball room dancing. The variations are interesting and keep me moving which is the most important part. I also try to walk when I need to run errands like to the post office, library, the doctor's office, and light shopping.

Staying positive is key. Are there going to be bad days, sure. I need not feel guilty for being human. Over all healthy and happy is where I want to be. As the old saying goes; anything worth having doesn't come easy. So many cliches could be said but I think that just about sums it up.

My Tips:

Get Happy- If you get positive you'll have more energy and motivation. Find more positives about yourself.
Make Healthy food substitutions.
Cook in bulk and use portion controlled containers to store food.
Check out DVDs and books from the library.
Mix up programs dance,Wii games, and walking. Keep it fun.
Stay Positive even when your having a bad day find something to smile about!

So, I have been gone for over two months. I did not just simply forget about my blog, no. I don't know if I have told you readers but I own two businesses. I have an online and catalog business called Ezentricity and I design my own jewelry (name still pending). So with the holiday season fast approaching I had a lot of work to do. I was working like crazy and then I decided to go home for the holidays also adding to the madness. It was fun and chaotic but I had to come back to fabulously fierce fashionista. I really want to share my journey with all of you. So we will be talking about everything on this blog. So here is your Warning: This blog talks about all kinds of topics including fashion. If you have comments please feel free to share. All will be read with an open mind and that is how I hope you will approach this blog. Now with that out of the way... It's a new year!!! I did not give myself any resolutions. Resolutions are like rules I inevitably break them. Hehe... it's true. So I am reading a book called Sugar Busters it was on NY Best sellers list for a while in the 90's I believe. I want to really to go full steam ahead when it comes to health and happiness in 2010. I doesn't matter where you are at, what time of year or day of the week if you want to give yourself a clean slate do so. Let's all find something to make 2010 worth smiling about.

Breast Cancer Awareness or Gross Exploitation?

The month of October is jam-packed with things to do. It’s Hispanic Heritage Month, now nationally recognized. Yay for that! Of course, wrapping up the month with fun and spooky costumes - along with sweet treats - is Halloween. However, a cause that has most women pause and take a minute to support is Breast Cancer. How could you miss all the pink? What started with powder pink ribbon and safety pins has turned into a consumer cash cow. The bigger the cause and publicity, the more the sponsors took notice of the bigger money signs.

Here is just a small horde of the products and businesses falling over themselves to donate to the cause.

My unease is with how much of the proceeds are going to the cause, and where is the line to be drawn between awareness and exploitation? Most of the merchandise sold displaying a pink ribbon has a website that can give the specifics of how much the company donates and usually includes the name of the foundation or organization where the money is going.

Don't misunderstand--I am a huge believer and supporter of philanthropic endeavors. It just concerns me that we have made awareness into a trend. The problem with trends is that they eventually pass. When it comes to supporting a cause, it is my sole contention to do it for the right reasons.

There’s a lot you can do besides buy a pink mixer or umbrella. How about spreading the word about the importance of self breast exam and the need for routine mammograms? Get more involved and create a group that discusses women’s issues, like health matters and how to connect with one another. Find out the reasons women don’t do these things and come up with a solution that can be done as a community. That is a very proactive way to fight.

Buying dish soap and yogurt is just a small piece of the puzzle. Let the month of October not only make you aware of breast cancer for a month, but of all the many causes that need your help and support year round. Don’t forget the real reason for the awareness in the first place.

The American Cancer Society's most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States are for 2009:
• 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer
• 40,170 deaths from breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is a little less 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Breast cancer death rates have been going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 2½ million breast cancer survivors in the United States.*

If you really want to help, try doing it the old fashioned way; get a spool of pink ribbon and some safety pins. Make the ribbons and hand them out to anyone for free. Share with them the facts I just gave you and tell them how they can spread the message of prevention.

Here on Fabulously Fierce Fashionista, I have already mentioned the necessity of being frugal. It’s a topic that has been on most Americans' mind for over a year now. We simply do not want to spend money on things we do not need. Department stores are creating commercials with their own lingo. TJ Maxx wants you to be a "Maxxinista." Marshall’s wants you to be "Shamelessly Shopportunistic," and Target wants to help you be a "Frugalista." What do they have in common?

They are all stores that have been offering nice quality merchandise for years, but are now cashing in on the economy (who would have thought?) in trying to create a buzz with catchy lingo to get you into their stores. I personally love the commercials that explain exactly how and why they are able to offer you such a good deal. So instead of me explaining it, watch below:

These stores have been popular among the working class for years. Now, they are becoming even more popular amongst anyone who wants to be on trend or simply wants to get the most for their money.

Target has even been able to exclusively offer products by high end designers like, Isaac Mizrahi, Anna Sui, Alexander McQueen, Liz Lange, Carlos Falchi, Jemma Kidd, Jaye Hersh, Anna Sheffield, and the list goes on. Target means serious business.

There are tons of ways to stretch that dollar, and here is a list of the stores that beckon you to come and shop: Burlington Coat Factory, Kohl’s, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Ross, JC Penny, Sears, Target, Payless, Cato, Fashion Bug, Maurices, and of course, you have your outlet malls.

Full Figure Fashion Week Fruition

For all that thought the time would never come. Let me tell you ladies it is here; the year of Full Figure Fabulousness(I know I love alliteration and making up new words- get used to it.).Queen City Full Figure Fashion week in Charlotte, North Carolina starts today presented by SizeRevolution , LLC. It start's Sept. 30th - Oct. 3rd. I can not (unfortunately) attend but I think it is very exciting that there are in fact events like this popping up around the country.

If you read The Journey of a Fabulously Fierce Fashionista, then you already know that I am a big believer in self love, no matter what your size is . I think the focus needs to be on your health and not just physical but mental well being. The way we feel and think; dictates what we do and who we are. Full Figure Fashion weeks publicly sends a message this is a normal way of living and you are not the only one. NYC rocked a FFFWeek June 25-27th of 2009. Yes it appears I am always the last to know.

It had never occurred to me that this would finally come to fruition. I mean its only a $25 - 60 billion dollar industry.That is a big demand and companies and designers are definitely starting to supply. In the words of a very funny Queen of Comedy Monique, "It is a new day!" I aspire to one day be a part of the fashion world and offer my designs to all sizes. I have plans to ease in to plus size fashion. I currently make jewelry and accessories. I love being able to do that because accessories are not size discriminant. The Journey of a Fabulously Fierce Fashionista

I was talking to a girl today in one of my classes. I was admiring her 5’ 9” well sculpted figure and she was telling me how it was not all that it seemed. I simply sat and listened as she opened up to me about the trials of her teen years. These were the things I never really considered to be an issue for what I call a “skinny girl.”

Now it may or may not surprise you when I tell you that I do not fall into that category. I never have, and probably (as fate would have it) never will. I began to realize that it is in fact true that all of us women suffer with image and body issues. It has taken me over 15 years to finally break down all the stereotypes of what a beautiful woman should be. I wanted to be sexy, desired, even respected for my looks alone. I tried most of the diets out there. I even tried some rather scary ones with adverse health effects, all in the name of greater beauty. Some of the good results only lasted for a while, but ultimately, I did not succeed.

So why am I choosing now to talk about this on the Fabulously Fierce Fashionista? Because I pride myself in being real. I do not want to hide who I am. I am ashamed no longer to say I have struggled with my weight. In fact, I still do. I am now embracing the idea of a lifestyle change. I have the strength to know that I am fabulous in any shape that I am in. I am choosing to be fierce and let no obstacles stand in my way. I want all females to feel beautiful as they are, and if you know the reasons you want to change, just make sure they are healthy ones.

This epiphany did not just come from a twenty-minute conversation with a girl in class. I have been thinking about this for weeks. I had no idea what I was going to do. I have decided that I will chronicle my journey as best I can. This is not an easy process to expose one’s self in this way. I want all women to know that it can be done. We all have to put our excuses away and do what we need to do to be happy. I have decided to push media-driven images aside and do what works for me!

When I say I am a Fabulously Fierce Fashionista, I believe in myself and my ability to conquer anything I want and do it with a sense of style and grace that would blow your mind. There is nothing contrived or airbrushed here. I am just me. My goal for this blog is for every girl or woman to be comfortable in their own skin and find the beauty that has always been there. I want to help as many women as I can and guide them on their journey to being fabulous, fierce, and overall content with who they are and what they see when they look in the mirror.

My boyfriend wears my make-up

Just kidding. Sounds more like a boring topic for Jerry Springer, no? The real topic is Guyliner. For all that may be uncertain as to exactly what I mean; it is a guy who wears eyeliner. Let’s round up the usual suspects.

#1 Pete Wentz: Well, I must say, he gets a yummy pass from me.

#2 Jared Leto: He gets a fail. He’s cuter clean and cut.

#3 The Good Charlotte Bros: It’s what they’re known for, so it’s a pass.

#4 The oh-so-funny Brit Russell Brand also gets a pass cuz he’s funny and we all know when you make a girl laugh, you more times than not are as good as gold.

The list could go on and on for the offenders who where Guyliner, but how much of a crime is it really? In my humble opinion it all depends on the image you are trying to send out.

In most cases, I would say it should be left to the rock stars, entertainers, and crossdressers. Emo is so over, people! It is just not a look that the every man could pull off.

Now as for my boyfriend wearing my make-up, the last time I checked Pete Wentz was married and Johnny Depp only plays a pirate on the big screen. So it’s a fail if you’re the average male!

Who is the Fabulously Fierce Fashionista?

My name is Jessie Lynn. I grew up in Lansing, MI from very humble beginnings. So to make up for lack of the trendy mall fashions, I decided to be a tomboy a more cost effective alternative to fashion. It did’nt matter what I wore on the outside I had the heart of a real fledgling fashionista. I had aunts that had their own hair salons and they were the definition of style. One aunt in particular would parade me around her salon. On less busy days she’d sit me in a chair and put a fashion magazine in my lap to flip through and play with my hair. To this day I love the smell of glam salon and I adore Aveda products but I am getting side tracked. So in my tomboy attire I go to the nearest drugstore and hit the magazine isle with my friends. While they are buying tigerbeat and other tween heart throb mags, I select Vogue, Glamour, and Harper’s Bazaar. I read the magazine admiring the super models clothes, hair, and make up and ripped out my favorite looks and would put them in a binder, creating a look book before I even knew what that was. This was something I continue to do today it helps me recreate seasonal looks on my budget. Many years later it was time for me to register for class and I had just moved to Indiana back from Austin,TX. I had made a lot of friends and in Austin they do halloween big, but of course it is Texas. I loved creating costumes for friends and I espeacially love doing dramatic make-up. So I enrolled as a doubled major in the Fine Arts and Costume Construction and Fashion Merchandising. I spent a year in a half in those majors. In that time I learned the principles of design, textiles,costume through the ages, and how to sew garments and construct costumes. I also was able to dable in theatre make up. My passion for creating fashion grew rapidly. So during the fall semester of my second year I decided to start my own jewelry and hair accessories line. It was just a spare time venture to start off with. During the spring semester I decided I needed a break from school and come up with a plan to focus and really build my brand. In the words of Anna Wintour “You either know fashion or you don’t.” With that independent and driven spirit I set of on my journey to become the Fabulously Fierce Fashionista. I am still in the process of expanding my company and I love to share my opinions on all things beauty and fashion. I decided to take to my biggest passions writing and fashion, put them together and start this blog. Now you know a little about me but one question remains; what makes a Fabulously Fierce Fashionista? I’ll answer that in my next post. Till then… ;)

OK, so when I think Paris Hilton I think a lot of things. One of those things would not be a quotable person, well at least not for me. There's only a few people on this earth that can pull off sounding like a broken record and just keep saying, That's Hot. I mean someone whose main mantra is That's Hot, you begin to think their vocab is extremely limited. However I was shocked to find that this in fact is not the case. I along with the rest of the fashionably fierce world can now have a new mantra to live by that has a little more substance to it. Paris Hilton was immortalized this week when the new edition of the "Oxford Book of Quotations" hit shelves, the book includes her quote: "Dress cute wherever you go, life is too short to blend in." So all that is left to say is thank you Paris Hilton from one Fabulously Fierce Fashionista to another.

Shows of the Glamorous Reality

I was asked recently, "With all the things that you are doing, do you ever just relax and have any down time?" The answer, believe it or not, is yes.

I actually live in a very small and boring city that is perfect for keeping me goal-oriented and less distracted. So when I do have down time, I love to watch so called "reality TV." So it will probably come to no surprise as to what it is that I watch. Sunday nights, I watch Kourtney and Khloe take Miami. I like to drink a cocktail and pretend I am the half sister they never knew they had. Not really, but I do find them to be so entertaining, and of course, I am inspired by the self-made success in the fashion industry. Young 20 something women entrepreneurs, what could be more fabulous?

Monday night is the Rachel Zoe Project and I mean...every show is just full of fashion drama, drama, and more drama. Rachel Zoe, in case you're just beginning to take baby steps in your fashionistahood, is America's #1 celebrity stylist. She dresses the best of the best in the A-list. Current clients include Debra Messing, Cameron Diaz, Anne Hathaway, Demi Moore, Jennifer Garner, Kate Blanchett, and Eva Mendes. I am sure she works with even more, but these are the celebs we get to see her dress.

She finds the right look for any red carpet situation, and in her words, wants her clients to “SHUT IT DOWN." She has the bitchiest executive assistant I have ever seen named Taylor. I really cannot stand her and hope she moves on in her career and that someone really humbles her soon. Ugh, ok, sorry.

On the other hand, Rachel has the most adorable styling assistant named Brad. He is the greatest which helps to balance the show. It's completely BANANAS! Tuesday Nights, I watch Daddy's Girl. It is a spin-off of Run's House that stars Rev Run's two oldest daughters Vanessa and Angela Simmons and documents their journey into the fashion world in LA while standing on their own. Yet another show based on two young women in the fashion business and sisters. The girls are the creators of the very successful shoe and apparel line called Pastry.

Then we skip over to Thursday night where I watch Project Runway. It is so inspiring. I love being the at home forth judge picking apart the designs. I am thinking about whipping out my sewing machine and also creating a few of the challenges at home. I will give myself the same amount of money they are given and the same amount of time. If I decide to do this, I may video tape the experience and then you can be the judge.

Then, I watch the second airing of The Atlanta Housewives. This is the best show on TV for just fun, glitz, fabulousness, and heavy doses of drama. My new favorite saying of the moment, thanks to one of the stars of the show, is from Sheree: "Who gonna check boo?" You have to see the episode to love it! All the women on there are funny and half of them are actually doing big things for themselves, not just spending their hubby's money. So those are the shows I love to watch.

It wasn't till I wrote this post that I noticed I even spend my downtime thinking about fashion. I will list the show and the stations they can be found on, but you will need to check your local listings for exact times and channels. Feel free to comment if you watch any of these shows.
